First off, Happy Valentine’s Day friends!
This is not the prettiest photo I’ve taken, BUT, the toddler was roaming about the house and the baby was screaming. I didn’t want this thing to melt, so voila! Prettier photos coming soon! 😉
Okay, so this recipe was a total accident last week, and this surprise shake came just in time for Valentine’s Day! I can be pretty boring with my morning shakes, and being out of my usual ingredients is what sparked this delicious little (or big because I like my shakes to straight up fit in a quart mason jar) treat of a shake.
I made my Dark Chocolate Cherry Superfood Shake for the hubby when he got home from training early classes this morning, and he couldn’t believe how much it tasted like those dark chocolate covered cherries.
The best part? It is so yummy and won’t give you the bloat that chocolate covered cherries or Valentine’s Day candy would, so you’ll look great for your date tonight. 😉 Come to think of it, I probably should’ve posted it yesterday so y’all could’ve had it for Galentine’s Day as well! Oops.
I’ll be honest, this is like the third or fourth time I’ve made this in the last week.
So one of the ingredients in this shake is this “mineral water” that our Naturopath recommended I make for Elias last week. It’s actually sort of similar to oat milk. I’ll post the recipe on here soon! (Recipe here!) For y’all with little ones, this stuff is packed with vitamins and minerals! Be sure to subscribe below so you don’t miss it!
However, with that said, the mineral water/oat milk can be replaced with any milk alternative (or regular milk if you’re crazy hard core like that) because it takes a few days to make! I used coconut milk and almond milk last week and both were good and hardly changed the flavor! (See I told you, I’ve made it a few times in the last week!)
Also, you may be wondering, what in the heck is with the poached egg whites and GROSS, will I taste it?! The answer is no! I told you this shake surprised me. We found out last week that Elias doesn’t do well with egg whites, but is fine with the yolk, so for breakfast this last week I’ve been poaching eggs and pouring the yolk on sprouted toast for him. Then I was left with these poached egg whites and was like, what the heck do I do with these. That happened to be the day I made this shake! I love the egg whites in my shakes now because 1) we buy pasture eggs and you better believe I’m not wasting ANY of that goodness or money 2) protein powders seem to bother my stomach and 3) you honestly can’t even taste it and it seems to make the smoothies creamier!
Anyhow, here we go!
Dark Chocolate Cherry Superfood Shake
- 1/2 to 1 cup ice
- 1/2 cup frozen dark sweet cherries
- 1/2 cup frozen kale (I buy a bunch, wash, and freeze it – this is about a handful)
- 2 poached egg whites
- 3 heaping tablespoons of organic cacao (you could do less…I like it chocolatey!)
- 1/2 – 1 cup oat water (or milk alternative)
- 1/2 tablespoon almond butter (don’t stress if you don’t have this, I’ve made it without and it’s just as good!)
- raw honey – to taste (I don’t like mine very sweet and used about 1 teaspoon)
Put it all in a blender, blend it up, and enjoy!
I like to top it with coconut shavings, and a frozen cherry because it makes me feel fancy and I love me such *crunch*. Treat yo’self! ;P
